In front of and '!!Many Bothans died.! This has always been something that bugged me a little bit and I was just rewatching The Clone Wars series so this question popped in my head again. From all apparent media the Republic shock troopers were used as police, security and prison guards, but did they ever live up to their namesake and partake in invasions? I suppose if they acted in some manner similar to SWAT or secret service then they would live up to the fast attack name but their purpose is still misleading. I'm not the most up with the Star Wars knowledge but I have skimmed through the wikia. I was just wondering if there was some lore I haven't found yet.

Is this just a case of fiction writers being misinformed (a la Halo) or am I the one missing something?. They seem to mainly be the Coruscant Guard forces, rather than some sort of elite infantry force used on the front lines.I suppose that 'shock trooper' might just be a name that was taken from some sort of pre-Clone army unit that guarded Coruscant, or was just chosen because it sounds intimidating. You are correct that the original meaning of in our history was units of infantry specifically trained to breakthrough enemy lines. However, the term is rarely used anymore, as the tactics pioneered by such units are commonplace. I think that is the case for the Republic's Army as well - every Clone Trooper is trained in 'shock tactics,' and I'd imagine that the same was true for pre-clone infantry forces. The use of the term 'shock trooper' might just be a relic of some sort of particularly illustrious infantry unit that ended up being used to guard and keep the peace in Coruscant sometime well before the events of the Clone Wars.
